On what grounds have Liberals defended democracy
Liberals, no matter classical or modern, believe in small state. As Thomas Paine put it: ââ¬Å"Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evilâ⬠. This concept links nicely with the idea of democracy, which literally means ââ¬Å"rule by peopleâ⬠. Liberals have defended democracy on the grounds that people must have a way of protecting themselves against the government and its actions. This type of democracy is also referred to as protective democracy. Moreover, democracy opens an ability for people to choose. In a pure democracy, for instance, people would vote on every occasion ND policy, hence the core liberal idea of individualism would flourish in its fullest. However, in modern society it is practically impossible to have pure democracy, so we have to resort to participatory democracy. This still support the idea of individualism, as each vote counts towards the end result. Moreover, democracy improves political participation as people know that their voices will be heard. It also encourages political education in order to make the best choice of the candidate, which links with the idea of reason and the core period in liberalism's history of enlightenment.By being rational and self-seeking, individuals will want the best for themselves, hence they will seek to vote for the candidate that suits their needs and beliefs best, In order to do so, they will have to read, debate or learn about them by other means, which will increase the overall Intelligence of Individuals and therefore help them achieve their full potential, which Is what modern liberals believe is the main function of the government. Talking about modern liberalism, they have also defended democracy on the grounds that It promotes pluralism In our society.Democracy gives many competing groups, such as political parties or pressure groups, a political voice, which connects those to the political system and hence maintains political stability. Stability Is further promoted I n terms of Individuals: they all have a vote, and even If their candidate looses the election, a rational Individual will understand that the candidate who won had the majority support. In conclusion, liberals have defended democracy as It adheres to their core principles of Individualism and reason, as well as their view of the role of the government. ICC will increase the overall intelligence of individuals and therefore help them achieve their full potential, which is what modern liberals believe is the main defended democracy on the grounds that it promotes pluralism in our society. Maintains political stability. Stability is further promoted in terms of individuals: they all have a vote, and even if their candidate looses the election, a rational individual liberals have defended democracy as it adheres to their core principles of individualism and reason, as well as their view of the role of the government.

The Curious Case of Whet
The Curious Case of Whet The Curious Case of ââ¬Å"Whetâ⬠The Curious Case of ââ¬Å"Whetâ⬠By Maeve Maddox Hereââ¬â¢s a question from Caro that cites a usage for whet that Iââ¬â¢ve never heard: I have recently seen several people using the word ââ¬Å"whetâ⬠in place of the word ââ¬Å"wetâ⬠. à (In one case, I asked a friend if shed meant to say ââ¬Å"wetâ⬠but she said it can also be used as a dirtier form for ââ¬Å"wantonâ⬠I can only wonder what the friend understands by wanton. Both whet and wet have been in the language since Ango-Saxon times. whet: OE hwettan to sharpenâ⬠Even back then the word could have the figurative sense of ââ¬Å"to encourage.â⬠wet: OE wà ¦t moist, liquid, OE wà ¦tan to be wet. OE wà ¦ter, ââ¬Å"water.â⬠When I taught young girls in England, I often heard one of them say that So-and-So was ââ¬Å"wet.â⬠It meant that the unfortunate girl under discussion was ââ¬Å"socially ineffectualâ⬠or, as they may be saying now, ââ¬Å"wimpy.â⬠I donââ¬â¢t often hear the word wanton in ordinary conversation. It can mean ââ¬Å"lasciviousâ⬠as in ââ¬Å"that wanton hussy.â⬠Youre more likely to hear someone refer to ââ¬Å"wanton cruelty.â⬠In the latter example the meaning is ââ¬Å"merciless, unfeeling, inhumanâ⬠: Leaving those dogs tied up in the backyard when they moved was wanton cruelty. The earliest meaning of wanton was similar to the French expression mal à ©levà ©, ââ¬Å"badly brought up.â⬠Wanton was a word to use when referring to unruly or unsocialized children as Shakespeare does in Lear: As flies to wanton boys are we to the Gods. They kill us for their sport. Wanton was originally a two-part word: wan-towen. OE wan meant ââ¬Å"wanting or lacking.â⬠OE togen was the past participle of teon, ââ¬Å"to train, to discipline.â⬠The wanton child was lacking in discipline. Expressions with ââ¬Å"whetâ⬠in the sense of ââ¬Å"encourageâ⬠or ââ¬Å"stimulateâ⬠whet oneââ¬â¢s appetite: stimulate oneââ¬â¢s desire to eat whet oneââ¬â¢s whistle: clear oneââ¬â¢s throat by taking a drink whet oneââ¬â¢s anger: increase feelings of anger Expressions with ââ¬Å"wetâ⬠wet oneââ¬â¢s whistle: take a drink wet-nurse (1620): a woman hired to nurse anotherââ¬â¢s infant wet dream (1851): nocturnal emission wet blanket (1879): a person who brings down the spirits of others, (the way a wet blanket may be used to smother a fire). to be all wet (1923): to be in the wrong wetback (1924): illegal Mexican immigrant (wet because of wading the Rio Grande). Bottomline: Using whet as a ââ¬Å"dirtier form of wantonâ⬠is totally bizarre. (But then, not being au courant with the latest slang, I may be all wet.) Avoid Common Mistakes That Beginning Reporters Make
Avoid Common Mistakes That Beginning Reporters Make Its the time of the year when introductory reporting class students are submitting their first articles for the student newspaper. And, as always happens, there are certain mistakes that these beginning reporters make semester after semester. So here is a list of common mistakes that novice journalists should avoid when writing their first news stories. Do More Reporting Too often beginning journalism students turn in stories that are weak, not necessarily because theyre poorly written, but because theyre thinly reported. Their stories dont have enough quotes, background information or statistical data, and its clear that theyre trying to piece together an article on the basis of meager reporting. A good rule of thumb: Do more reporting than is necessary. And interview more sources than you need to. Get all the relevant background information and statistics and then some. Do this and your stories will be examples of solid journalism, even if you havent yet mastered the newswriting format. Get More Quotes This goes along with what I said above about reporting. Quotes breathe life into news stories and without them, articles are arid and dull. Yet many journalism students submit articles that contain few if any quotes. Theres nothing like a good quote to breathe life into your article so always do plenty of interviews for any story you do. Back Upà Broad Factual Statements Beginning journalists are prone to making broad factual statements in their stories without backing them up with some sort of statistical data or evidence. Take this sentence: The vast majority of Centerville College students hold down jobs while also going to school. Now that may be true, but if you dont present some evidence to back it up there is no reason your readers should trust you. Unless youre writing something thats plainly obvious, such as the Earth is round and the sky is blue, make sure to dig up the facts to support what you have to say. Get Full Names of Sources Beginning reporters often make the mistake of just getting the first names of people they interview for stories. This is a no-no. Most editors will not use quotes unless the story contains the full name of the person being quoted along with some basic biographical information. For example, if you interviewed James Smith, an 18-year-old business major from Centerville, you should include that information when you identify him in your story. Likewise, if you interview English professor Joan Johnson, you should include her full job title when you quote her. No First Person Students who have been taking English classes for years often feel the need to use the first person I in their news stories. Dont do it. Reporters almost never resort to using the first person in their hard news stories. Thats because news stories should be an objective, dispassionate account of events, not something in which the writer injects his or her opinions. Keep yourself out of the story and save your opinions for movie reviews or editorials. Break Up the Long Paragraphs Students accustomed to writing essays for English classes tend to write paragraphs that go on and on forever, like something out of a Jane Austen novel. Get out of that habit. Paragraphs in news stories should typically be no more than two to three sentences long. There are practical reasons for this. Shorter paragraphs look less intimidating on the page, and they make it easier for editors to trim a story on a tight deadline. If you find yourself writing a paragraph that runs more than three sentences, break it up. Short Ledes The same holds true for the lede of the story. Ledes should generally be just one sentence of no more than 35 to 40 words. If your lede gets much longer than that it means youre probably trying to cram too much information into the first sentence. Remember, the lede should just be the main point of the story. The small, nitty-gritty details should be saved for the rest of the article. And there is rarely any reason to write a lede thats more than one sentence long. If you cant summarize the main point of your story in one sentence, then you probably dont really know what the story is about, to begin with. Spare Us the Big Words Sometimes beginning reporters think that if they use long, complicated words in their stories they will sound more authoritative. Forget it. Use words that are easily understood by anyone, from the fifth-grader to the college professor. Remember, youre not writing an academic paper but an article that will be read by a mass audience. A news story isnt about showing off how smart you are. Its about conveying important information to your readers. A Few Other Things When writing an article for the student newspaper always remember to put your name at the top of the article. This is necessary if you want to get a byline for your story. Also, save your stories under file names that relate to the topic of the article. So if youve written a story about tuition increasing at your college, save the story under the file name tuition hike or something like that. That will enable the editors of the paper to quickly and easily find your story and place it in the proper section of the paper.

Nursing - Research Paper Example She is normal and not depressed although she retired from her job. Interviewing is similar to courting where two individuals have to agree on something before doing it. Connection between an interviewer and an interviewee can be seen through numerous aspects. In this interview, there was a sound and outstanding connection between the interviewer and the interviewee. This was seen through the attention that the patient gave to the questions that she was asked (Peate, 2010). She held onto her judgments and opened her mind. The patient kept her ears and eyes into what she was asked and held onto her feelings or body language that would indicate any sort of body language. Additionally, the patient remained curious and deferential throughout the interview. When the patient was engaged in the interview, she responded succinctly. The interview took place in the patientââ¬â¢s house, in her living room, on Monday 10th June 2013 at 6pm and took 30 minutes. Part II: General Assessment Whenev er individuals get to the age of 75 and above, they experience changes in their life. Such changes include deterioration of the personââ¬â¢s immune system, memory loss, wear and tear on joints and bones, skin changes and loss of sight. The patient has grey hair, vision loss, walking problems and difficulties in using the bathroom. Eyesight weakens as people get older. Research indicates that at the age of 60, eye cataracts degenerate resulting to weakened sight. Cataracts are cloudy regions in the human eye lens that cause loss of eyesight (Anderson et al, 2010). Cataracts may form and stay small and not affect eyesight while they may become large and affect eye sight. Graying of hair is a clear sign of aging. It can only be understood through delving into biology. Hair color is manufactured by melanin, a protein underneath the skin. When individuals age, the melanin cells also age and start dying out and stop making hair color. Therefore, the color of an aged person turns gray d ue to the loss of color by melanin. She cannot bear to stand in the bathroom since her joints and bones have worn out. Additionally, she needs help in order to take a bath (Anderson, 2010). The patient notes that she cannot walk for long periods and cannot walk too without a walker. The weight bearing joints and bones in an individual wear down as he or she ages. As a result, the weakened bones prevent an individual from walking. These bones could either be infected with arthritis. This results from the wearing off of cartilage in joints and, therefore, leaves the bones to rub against each other (Anderson, 2010). Additionally, the patient noted that she could not hold her bladder and stool. Loss of bladder control, commonly referred as incontinence, is a common disorder among the aged. Statistics indicate that out of 10 aged people, one is likely to have urinal incontinence. However, this problem seems to be more prevalent among women than in men. The patient is aware of her aging c ondition and understands that she cannot carryout normal daily activities without help. This is because she is unable to walk and cannot hold her bladder and stool. This makes it hard and challenging for her to do anything for herself. For instance, she faces difficulties when using the bathroom. This is because she cannot stand for long due to her weak bones and joints. The patient satisfies her basic needs through retirement or work through attending church meetings, hobbies through taking trips,
Are Cell Phones Really Dangerous to People Research Proposal
Are Cell Phones Really Dangerous to People - Research Proposal Example The problem has been identified: children have often access to cell phones with the permission of their parents. This trend is extremely dangerous especially since scientists have set severe restrictions regarding the potential use of cell phones by children ââ¬â but these restrictions seem to be ignored by most of the people worldwide. At this point, the following problem appears: are cell phones really dangerous to people? This problem has been explored through a series of relevant studies. It is proved that cell phones can actually harm health; moreover, it seems that the risks for health can be severe for people of all ages. At the next level, it has been made clear that the ways in which cell phones can affect the health of humans can vary; the direct use of cell phone may be less harmful compared to the residence near a cell phone tower. Dr. Vini Khurana studied the effects of cell phones on health; his research led to the following findings: ââ¬Ëthe use of handsets for 10 years or more can double the risk of brain cancerââ¬â¢ (Geoffrey 2008). In the above study, is given on the fact that certain types of cancer can take quite long to develop ââ¬â even up to a decade; therefore, the above study ââ¬â having lasted for such period - provides a precise estimation of the potential effects of cell phones on the brain. Another important finding of the study of Khurana has been the following one: cell phones can be more dangerous from smoking; the above finding indicates the level of risk related to the use of cell phones but also the level at which cell phones intervene in daily activities have led to the development of addiction similar to smoking ââ¬â as this problem is revealed through the study presented above. The various aspects of the danger of cell phones for human health are analyzed in the article of Kovach (2007); in the above article reference is made to the findings of the research developed by George Carlo, a medical scientis t who has spent years on studying the effects of cell phones ââ¬â both of handsets and cell phone towers ââ¬â on health; his research lasted from 1993 up to 1999 and reveals a series of important aspects of the health risks related to the use of cell phones. The key findings of his study could be summarized as follows: a) cell phones are not tested as for their risks for health; they enter the market without any testing, as a result of a legislative gap of the period when these devices appeared ââ¬â the 1980s, b) cell phones can cause severe problems of health, even death, since they are involved in the continuous transmission of waves which can adversely affect the bio-field of humans (Kovach 2007); it is possible for this reason that cell phones have been also related to the changes in the DNA of their users ââ¬â as also highlighted below.Ã
